Press
Welcome to Dark Star Cafe Press!
Here you'll find what everyone has been talking about!
This is the first article written about us, just after we opened.
It was published in The Sandpaper on 7/11/07
If you know me, you'll know I am known to miss a thing or two every once in a while.... We
were written up in the Sandpaper again for our environmentally friendly packaging & new
breakfast service this past summer, but the article was not saved....OOPS!
Here is an article published in the Atlantic City Press about our being featured in a novel
about LBI and the book signing we did with the author, Lucy Finn.
On February 1st, 2008 we were written up in the A C Press for our cub
scout event, where each scout made his own pizza!
They each got their cooking badge and a  good time was had by all!
A couple of weeks later the local brownie troup came in & did the
same thing! These events went so well that we now offer birthday
parties where the kids get to create their own pizza!
Here is an article written about us in the AC Press regarding our environmentally friendly
packaging. We really try to help the environment for our kids & theirs as well.
Here's an article published in The Islander in January '09 featuring us.
I thought they did a great job, but you tell us!
As mentioned elsewhere in this site,
we were named
"One of the Best" Delicatessens &
"One of the Best" Take-Out Restaurants
in the 2007 Islander Readers' Poll..
In 2008 there was no Readers' Poll
conducted, but we received
Best Sandwich Shop in Ocean County
& placed #5 on the whole
Jersey Shore in the
"Best of the Shore"
FoxPhilly Hot List!

Best sandwiches and pizza anywhere.... An
unbelievable treat are the chicken pot pies. We
usually call ahead, order a dozen, freeze them, and
then anytime we want a hazzle free, great dinner,
pop them in the oven for 45 minutes or so and
they're fabulous. When we're down to 3 or 4 left, we
get another dozen!

My husband and I love Dark Star. We recommend it
to all our friends and Dark Star is always a stop for
our summer company. They love it, too. The food is
always fresh and it's gourmet food at great prices.
Once you try Dark Star, you will always go back. We
special order chicken pot pies and they are
fabulous. They also have the best pizza not just on
the island, but for miles around. You can get the
basics, and you can also get special dishes like
broccoli rabe, sauteed in olive oil and garlic. YUM!
The food at Dark Star is as good as you can get.
And, Tony and the staff are always friendly. Try Dark
Star. You won't be disappointed.

neighborhood treasure!

Was on LBI visiting family. Had a few great lunches
there. Returned again when visiting family in Toms
River & made the ride over. Loved the broccoli rabe'
& sausage pizza & best cheese steak sandwich!!
Took home Pot Pies as treats for another night to
the Toms River family, all enjoyed very much. Wish
we had a local place like this in our FL
neighborhood. Hope to visit them again this
summer!! Owner is a great human being. Hope they
can hang on in this economy because they food is
great.

Tony is phenomenal. Everything in his cafe is
carefully created, perfectly fresh, and a delight to the
senses. LBI is very lucky to have him! Try his fresh
mozzerella- it is out of this world!

Dark Star Cafe is a great place on LBI for a casual
meal. Food is made by hand and always fresh. The
reuben is excellent! Take home some chips and
salsa - they are great too

I stumbled upon Dark Star a little more than a year
ago when it opened in place of a small pizza place
on LBI (Long Beach Island) because it was winter
and nothing else was open. I found a gem and it's
now become one of my favorite places to eat while
on LBI.

Executive Chef Tony Salzarulo is amazing.
Everything in the place in hand-prepared. He has a
great sense for flavors and textures that go together
and everything I have tried there so far is exquisite.
My all time favorite indulgence is the fresh fried
mozzarella medallions with pesto and fresh tomato-
basil salsa - absolutely to die for.

After visiting the Dark Star Cafe several times and
having take out from there as well, we decided to talk
to Tony about catering a party for us for our
daughter's college graduation. He was wonderful in
suggesting the dishes he thought would be
appropriate for a party on the beach and was honest
about the ones he didn't think would travel well (the
aforementioned mozzarella). Everything he made,
from the jambalaya to the BBQ chicken was
wonderful and people couldn't stop talking about it
all. Tony delivered everything, set it all up and made
sure everything was perfect, even returning to the
restaurant to fetch something he had forgotten,
without a moment of hesitation. The portions were
plentiful and there was more than enough to go
around. The price for the party was crazy
reasonable!!

If you ever find yourself on LBI, I highly recommend
that you go by and visit Dark Star. It will surprise you
just as it did me.

The Dark Star Cafe has a wide variety of food. From
pizzas to sandwiches to fabulous desserts, there is
something for everyone and everything is delicious.

A New Favorite LBI restaurant
A new entry to our family favorites would have to be
the Dark Star Cafe in Ship Bottom. Everything is
homemade, fresh and delicious. Their sandwiches
are so good, I had to go to them two days in a row!
They offer Mojo to Go, and the food is fantastic!

Try the Dark Star Cafe in Ship Bottom. It's relatively
new and the food is very good. The owners are quite
accomodating when it comes to special requests for
catering.

I stopped here when i was checking on my
beachhouse in the winter. I had never tried it before,
and since there was nothing open my dad and i went
to eat there. We each ordered a cheesesteak+fries.
It was one of the best cheesesteaks and fries i have
ever had. the role was soft and it was perfectly
cooked. For the ride home i got a scone, which was
also one of the best scones i have ever had. I am
definitely going back in the summer when im at my
beach house!

An incredible experience in every way. The hardest
thing was deciding what to order. There are so many
beyond delicious possibilities. Quality and service is
unsurpassed. Love you Dark Star. Wish we lived
closer.

We love the new look, and the great food! It's
affordable- and you will have enough for a doggie
bag!
